From Place to Place, Step by Step

Artist Marco Godinho invites us to discover, day by day, a page from his artist’s book From Place to Place, Step by Step / De place en place, de proche en proche (2019–2021).
Comprising 62 pages, the book echoes the total number of days in July and August.
Interested in time, language, and the temporalities of daily repetition, the artist conceived this publication as a study and sourcebook of inspiration, poetically nourishing his entire practice, and in particular the work Remember What Is Missing, The Infinite House (2019–).

With Remember What Is Missing, The Infinite House, the artist continues his exploration of a gesture that is both simple and radical. During the renovation of his house, he chose to leave the roof open to the natural elements, light, time, and the events of the world until new tiles were installed. By temporarily making his home permeable to changing weather conditions and the passage of time, he transformed the house into an infinite space.

The original terracotta roof tiles were then ground into a fine red dust, in a symbolic gesture of returning the material to its primordial state. This dust became the primary material of an installation: a vast carpet spreading across the floor, covering an area equivalent to that once occupied by the missing roof. Within this red expanse, the words Remember What Is Missing, The Infinite House emerge through their very absence: the letters become visible because the dust has been removed from their shape.

Each presentation of the work constitutes a new activation and, consequently, a new page of this house transformed into an infinite one. At an architectural scale, the installation unfolds like the monumental page of a book that is continuously being written.
In most instances, From Place to Place, Step by Step / De place en place, de proche en proche serves as its point of departure - a poetic and conceptual framework from which each reactivation gives rise to a new text, allowing the work to expand across time and space.
